At an event held at its campus in Redmond, Washington on Monday, Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) introduced a new class of personal computers with AI features called “Copilot+ PC.”
The new models, starting at $1000 and set to be available for sale from June 18 onwards, can perform a greater number of AI tasks without relying on remote cloud servers, according to Microsoft. One standout feature is “Recall,” which records all computer activities, including web browsing and voice conversations, and stores the recordings on the device, allowing users to retrieve their past activities even months later.
Yusuf Mehdi, Microsoft’s head of consumer marketing, stated that the company expects sales of these AI-enhanced personal computers to reach 50 million units within the next year. Mehdi mentioned in a media briefing that having faster AI assistants directly on personal computers would be “the most compelling reason to upgrade your computer in years.”
Additionally, Microsoft executives announced that GPT-4o, the latest innovation from OpenAI, will soon be integrated into Copilot.
The tech giant also unveiled the latest versions of Surface Pro tablets and Surface Laptops featuring Qualcomm (QCOM) chips based on Arm Holdings’ (ARM) design.
Microsoft also introduced Prism, a technology enabling applications designed for Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) and AMD (NASDAQ: AMD) processors to run on chips using Arm’s architecture.
Microsoft announced that the new Copilot+ personal computers can be purchased directly from the company and through various manufacturers, including Acer and Asustek.
