On Tuesday, International Business Machines (IBM) announced its intention to release a series of artificial intelligence models as open-source software and collaborate with Saudi Arabia to develop a proficient artificial intelligence system in the Arabic language.
Unlike competitors such as Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT), IBM prefers a similar open-access strategy to Meta Platforms’ (NASDAQ: META) by offering its “Granite” artificial intelligence models for businesses to adapt for their own use.
The Granite tools are designed to help software developers accelerate their coding efforts. IBM aims to generate revenue from these models by facilitating reliable performance in data processing facilities after modifications and through a subscription-based service called Watsonx.
The technology company’s approach aims to profit from customers using artificial intelligence models regardless of whether they originate from IBM or other providers and whether they are executed in IBM’s data processing facilities or elsewhere.
IBM’s CEO Arvind Krishna stated in an interview with Reuters, “We are at the beginning stages of productive artificial intelligence models.”
“In the end, competition is good for consumers. We aim to ensure security and ethical responsibility.”
Additionally, the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority plans to use Watsonx to train the “ALLaM” Arabic language model, thus leveraging IBM’s linguistic capabilities to enhance a range of Arabic dialects.
